Wall Calendars: 2021

Light + Shadow

24" × 32" Inkjet Prints

The first calendar I acquired from 4AD Records was from 1993, when I was working at Elektra Entertainment as the U.S. distributor for the indy U.K. label. Oddly enough, a 1993 calendar is reusable in 1999, 2010, and 2021. Since 2021 felt like a repeat year, I chose to make a “Light + Shadow” themed calendar using my cell phone camera to capture and document the indoor scenery from 2020–2021: all the light sources, shadows, and reflections I re-encountered in my home from the previous year.

This series will be in a solo exhibition in Opole, Poland, Aug 2022.

This project was inspired by the 4AD Records promotional calendars that were created in the 1990s by v23.

23 Envelope, a design team of Vaughan Oliver and Nigel Grierson, created artwork for 4AD Records until 1987. After ’87, Oliver continued to work for 4AD with a new studio name, v23, collaborating with designer, Chris Bigg, and photographer, Simon Larbalestier, among many others.

I immediately respond to the album cover designs and promotional materials created by v23 with an emotional intensity that is unforgettable. In their work, typography becomes image, information becomes illustrative texture, and the lines between type and image begin to blur.
