All those developing their knowledge of typography would benefit from a contextual understanding of the typefaces/fonts they’re investigating.

Along with other features and resources, this site will simultaneously allow a viewer to see where each listing fits in historical sequence (time, eras, and movements) and to also see what else was happening in the world when it was created.

In 2021 this project was refined through UX/UI development and prototyping to determine basic functionality, establish features that will be included in the 1st version, and what will be reserved for version 2.0. In the second peer-reviewed, main conference presentation at 2021 TypeCon Philadelphia, I summarized the research and demonstrated the prototype by showing goals and tasks a user would most likely perform.

An unsolicited recap and review of this research presentation was published on the typecon.com website. This presentation was listed first in their favorite highlights from the second day of the conference, and they wrote the following:

“This talk is all about context, understanding, and appreciation for the way type arrives at our doorstep, and how it then reflects back into the zeitgeist. Perrin Stamatis updates us on the progress of an interactive timeline of typography history, which is destined to become one of the most invaluable resources in all of typography. What we sometimes lack when discussing and learning about fonts is context, mainly cultural and historical. Perrin’s interactive resource tool visualizes the arrow of time and allows you to overlay the events in type with events in other fields throughout history like art, design, or world events. This timeline attempts to inject the connotation of every font through time and allow us all to engage more completely with every font we encounter.”
